Nuclear Medicine Technology Program Updates

New program affiliates will provide broader clinical experiences and opportunities for students, in news from Nuclear Medicine this year.

New Clinical Affiliate Additions

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital and Virginia Heart have been introduced as affiliates of the VCU Nuclear Medicine Program!

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital adds to and enriches our students’ diverse clinical experiences, while fostering a more comprehensive clinical experience. The new site offers variability in the types of diagnostic procedures students can observe and allow them to fulfill radioiodine therapy competencies. Michaela Atwell, BS, CNMT (Class of 2021) serves as clinical supervisor for our students.

Virginia Heart will expose the students to Rubidium-82 PET/CT procedures and provide them with a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular procedures. Heather Koo (Class of 2014) is the program manager and technical director for Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiovascular PET/CT at the Falls Church facility; she serves as clinical supervisor for our students.

Student Corner

To mark National Nuclear Medicine Technology Week last fall, our Class of 2027 students celebrated with pizza, some games and College of Health Professions sunglasses!

Faculty Engagement

At last year's annual Mid-Eastern Chapter SNMMI Meeting at Tyson's Corner, attendees were encouraged to wear costumes! The Nuclear Medicine faculty connected with Mark Crosthwaite, retired program director, who gave an exciting presentation on Brain Imaging in Nuclear Medicine.

Congratulations to Charlie Downing, our program’s clinical coordinator, for completing the VCU Health Richmond 8K.
